Marawa and SABC’s ‘mjolo’ ends in dramatic fashion yet again
Veteran sports caster told through SMS not to bother coming to the SABC studios for his last show on Friday after announcement of his axing

Robert Marawa’s ‘mjolo’ like relationship with the SABC has ended yet again. The two parties parted ways on Friday with the public broadcaster sending out a short statement to announce Marawa’s departure.
Marawa was doing the prime time sports show weekdays which was broadcast simultaneously on Metro FM and Radio 2000. And while it was initially thought Marawa would present his last show on Friday evening, the SABC has asked him not to bother doing it.
The likable sports caster announced this on Twitter in Friday afternoon, saying he received an SMS telling him not to bother coming for the last show.
“So after serving the Public Broadcaster through time, I am sent yet another text from a person in an “acting” position informing me of this. Same modus operandi as SS (SuperSport).
“What do they fear about the last Show? Thank you Mzansi for the love and support through the years,” wrote Marawa. He also posted the screenshot of the SMS.
Marawa also left independent broadcaster, SuperSport under a cloud after relations had soured. His sudden exit from the SABC however came as a shock to many as his show was well received and had a huge following.
Marawa had previously been fired from the SABC but was later rehired after public calls for his reinstatement and SABC’s struggle to find a suitable replacement.
The SABC also announced that TV sports caster, Vaylen Kirtley was also leaving. Kirtley was the sports presenter on famous SABC2 morning news update show, Morning Live.

“The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC), would like to announce the departure of renowned sports broadcasters, Mr. Robert Marawa and Ms. Vaylen Kirtley.
“Ms. Kirtley presented the sport segment of SABC’s television current affairs show Morning Live and was also an anchor for SABC sport programming.
She joined the SABC 20 years ago and started with junior sports programmes at the time. The SABC would like to wish Mr. Marawa and Ms. Kirtley well in their future endeavors and appreciates their contribution to SABC Sport programming‚” reads the statement from the SABC.
