Following another week of horrible violence directed at gays and lesbians, it was good to witness a beautiful occasion where love was the winner as Vusi Cele and Siyanda Shange publicly got engaged, and set social networks on fire with fiery debates.

While the rights of gays and lesbians are protected under the constitution of the country, their treatment by the community at large still leaves a lot to be desired.

The two lovebirds celebrated their engagement at Maqaqa Exclusive Lifestyle over the weekend, leaving lots of people taking to social media to express their opinions about the their relationship.

Commenting on Facebook, Zandile Mdlalose said: Please God come back, who will marry our kids if things are like this?”

Precious Pappeti spit fire defending the lovers: “We don’t need such especially during times when gay men are being killed because of their sexuality.”

Gender Based Violence has been a very stressful topic in the country, as much as it was mainly linked to women and children, the gays and lesbians community has also faced GBV.

Sandile Mthembu, also a member of the gays and lesbians community saw the post and said he felt like there should be many more weddings for homosexuals.

“It’s beautiful, I think this shows how evolving the lesbians and gays community is. I mean we all know how some were even scared about being open when it came to their relationships due to the society and communities that we live,” said Mthembu.

He carried on to say that we live in a society where homosexuals are constantly reminded that their lives do not matter.

At church, a pastor will preach hatred by reminding them that they are living a sin. So, seeing more gay constantly living in colour and overcoming hate crimes and all the negativity is just a beautiful thing.

Vusi said he need to consult his partner before he commented on his engagement.
