Woman to answer questions on Anele’s death ?

It is understood that a case of culpable homicide has been opened after the shock passing of former Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns defender, Anele Ngcongca who died in a car accident on Monday morning. The accident happened on the N2 highway while Ngcongca was believed to be on his way to Durban from KwaDlangezwa, on the north coast of KwaZulu-Natal.

The 33 year old was loaned to AmaZulu by Sundowns and he died without kicking the ball this season for either clubs. It has emerged that authorities are investigating a culpable homicide case, with the woman alleged to have been driving a prime suspect in the investigation.

It has been established that Mthunzini SAPS who arrived at the scene discovered that Ngcongca was not driving and an unidentified woman was in fact the driver. The woman was taken to a nearby hospital where she is in a critical condition.

Condolences have been pouring in from all over the world since the news of Ngcongca’s death broke.

Sundowns extended their condolences through their spokesperson Alex Shakoane.

“I’m saddened by the news of Anele’s passing. To the Ngcongca family we say the family of Mamelodi Sundowns Football Club the Yellow Nation is with you. We also lost someone that we loved very much,” said Shakoane.

The Gugulethu-born’s death came as shock to all South African football fraternity. Former Sundowns coach Pitso  Mosimane was no exception.

The only thing Mosimane, who is now mentoring Egyptian gaint Al Ahly, posted on his twitter account was: “Legend. Rest in Peace.”

Ngcongca left behind his 10 year old daughter Sethu and his fiancee, Linda Racaza and his mother.

His football career kickstand when playing for Cape Town FC Fortune in National First Division back in 2003 to 2007. Later in 2007 he joined Belgian outfit Genk where he played 223 matches from 2007 to 2016.

After his long spell at Genk he then joined French team Troyes on loan from Genk. Later in 2016 he was brought back home by Mosimane to join Sundowns.

At Sundowns he won Absa Premiership in 2017/18, 2018/19 and 2019/2020 season. He won Telkom Knockout in 2019 and Nedbank Cup last season.

Ngcongco has joined the long list of professional players who died in car accidents over the years. Former Orlando Pirates striker Lesley Manyathela (in 2003), Gift Leremi (former Pirates and Sundowns 2007), Richard Henyekane (former Golden Arrows and Sundowns in 2015), Cecil Lolo (former Ajax Cape Town in 2015), Mondli Cele (former Maritzburg United in 2016) and Sinethemba Jantjie (former Free State Stars in 2019).
