Khaya Mthethwa excited by Gagasi FM’s energy as he joins station

By Sihle Mkhize

Decorated and award-winning gospel singer and radio presenter Khaya Mthethwa is returning to Durban.

Mthethwa will rejoin Durban-based commercial radio station, Gagasi FM next month.

He has been with Gauteng based Kaya FM and his last show was five days ago.

The former idols winner made his name on radio with Metro FM Mthethwa co-hosted the station’s popular Sunday gospel show The Sacred Space with Thami Ngubeni.

Now, Mthethwa will co-host The Midday Connexion with DJ Sonic on Gagasi FM.

“I’m very excited to be a part of the family at Gagasi FM. I am a huge fan and I listen to it whenever I am in Durban.

“I think I relate. The energy, relevance, music, and content which they created for youth and listeners in general.

“I am looking  forward to the new relationship we are about to start,” Mthethwa said.

The station’s new 2023/24 weekday line-up was announced by Alex Mthiyane, the head of department for audience experience on Thursday.

He made the announcement during the breakfast show, The Uprising Breakfast show which is hosted by Felix Hlophe and Njabs Zwane.

However, Gagasi FM left out  Flymotion in the cold.  One radio commentator on social media expressed dissatisfaction.

“I’m sad about #Flymotion being left out of the new #GagasiFM line-up. I’ve always enjoyed his organic, no-frills, DJ Khabzela-esque, funny-dude-from-the-hood-just-having-fun brand of radio.

“I really hope he won’t be entirely lost to the medium,” wrote Agiza Hlongwane.

Hlophe will remain on the breakfast show where he will be joined by Minnie Ntuli from East Coast Radio, while Njabs Zwane will move to The Lift Off from 9am-12pm.

Hlophe has brought some stability to the Gagasi FM breakfast show since he joined.

The station had struggled to find a replacement when Mzo Gumede left them for Ukhozi FM some three years ago.

But now Hlophe, who is also a well-known comedian and MC, has filled that role and his show is said to be doing well.
