Family who survived house collapse to get better house

KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Public Works, Peggy Nkonyeni has brought a glimmer of hope to a destitute family who miraculously survived when their derelict rondavel suddenly collapsed over them in the early hours of Monday morning.

Following her visit to the Mbambo family in KwaNgcolosi, outside Hillcrest in the west of Durban, Nkonyeni directed her department’s officials to prioritize the construction of a new decent house for the now homeless family.

“Since we know there is a housing project in Ward 8 of the eThekwini Metro, we have decided to go there and direct the contractors to prioritize this destitute family,” she said.

Nkonyeni also showed gratitude to the ward councillor Themba Shelembe for being hands on in assisting the Mbambos during their hours of serious need.

The near-death incident that has been trending on social media platforms since Monday almost claimed the life of Ncamisile Mbambo (56) and her grand daughter Thenjiwe Gwala (8) who both escaped with injuries ranging from minor to serious.

It is alleged that the victims including Ncamisile, the owner of the derelict rondavel, were still asleep when the incident happened.

Although it is said that they were trapped under the collapsed mud wall for some time, they both made it out alive as Ncamisile was treated for minor injuries and released while Thenjiwe is still fighting for her life in hospital.

In her response to this apparent blessing in disguise, Mbambo said she was grateful at the immediate intervention by MEC Nkonyeni and ward councillor, adding that it was God’s grace that there was no fatality.
