Former Cape Town City coach Benni McCarthy had emerged as hot favourite to land AmaZulu head coach job, according to widespread rumours. The former Bafana Bafana is linked to the coaching job in Durban after AmaZulu shocked many in football circles by announcing Ayanda Dlamini has voluntarily chosen to step aside.

Dlamini, who helped the club survive relegation, had been in charge for three months and leaves a record of 1 win, 1 loss and two draws.

In the statement AmaZulu said Dlamini would be sent to development where he cut his teeth through before ascending to the senior coaching job. The Durban club is under new management with chairman Sandile Zungu busy in the transfer market. The businessman from Umlazi has signed high profile players who include ex Bafana Bafana and Kaizer Chiefs star Siphiwe Tshabalala, Orlando Pirates trio of Xola Mlambo, Luvuyo Memela and Augustine Mulenga and Phakamani Mahlambi who is on loan from Mamelodi Sundowns.

Those in the know about AmaZulu affairs say by bringing a high profile personality like McCarthy, the Usuthu management wants to attract sponsors. It is also said that McCarthy wants to bring along his own technical personnel, which has cast doubt about assistant Allan Freese role in the club from now on.
