Ngizwe Mchunu’s wife cries as he is handcuffed and whisked away
Sobbing July says they didn't expect he would be arrested after handing himself over, but he had a warrant issues against him

#FreeZuma campaign leader and former Ukhozi FM presenter, Ngizwe Mchunu is expected to appear at the Randburg Court following his arrest on Monday afternoon. This comes after Mchunu handed himself over to the police at Durban Central Police Station.
Last week, Police minister, Bheki Cele said the police were looking for certain individuals. They were suspected of being the masterminds behind the public violence and looting in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng.
Cele’s description of one of the suspects fit Mchunu’s profile. Mchunu responded by pledging to hand himself over. This was after another who was said to have been a suspect, Thulani Dlomo has handed himself over to the police on Friday.

Dlomo was however released without being charged after the police said there was no active docket against him. Speaking after Mchunu’s arrest, Advocate Vusi Khathi said a warrant of arrest against Mchunu was issued in Randburg.
“He surrendered himself at Provincial Headquarters and then two investigating officers showed us a warrant of arrest against him. The warrant was issued in Randburg. He must appear in Randburg, the latest day to appear in court would be on Wednesday because 48 hours will be expired then.
“We think Wednesday is the day where we can start to talk about bail issues. Details related to his charges cannot be revealed at the moment,” said Advocate Khathi.
Mchunu had made a public pledge to hand himself over on Friday. “On Monday I am going to hand myself over at the nearest police station. I need answers from the provincial police commissioner. I am tired of being labelled as a lawbreaker,” Mchunu has said.
Before that, Mchunu had claimed to be in hiding as he had got wind that the police are hunting him. He claimed that at some point the hotel he was in had been surrounded by the police.

He further claimed to be aware of attempts to assassinate him, and that he felt his family were no longer safe as well. Mchunu became famous for his “Azikhale” war cry. This was seen as encouraging people to protest. He was doing this to demand that former president Jacob Zuma is released from the Estcourt Correctional Centre.
In tears, one of Mchunu’s wives, July Mchunu said she didn’t expect her husband be arrested. She was speaking outside the police station where Mchunu’s arrest was processed.
