Mkhwanazi joins SuperSport, says he’s grateful to be back

By OkaDonga Gumbi

SuperSport United’s new defender, Buhle Mkhwanazi says the time he spent on the sidelines has been difficult. But it has also toughened him up.

Mkwanazi didn’t play last season as he was still in a contractual dispute with former club, Bidvest Wits.

When Wits’ status was sold to Tshakhuma before the start of last season, Mkhwanazi was left with nowhere to go.

Tshakhuma refused to take him saying they could not afford him. But Wits also refused to pay him his dues and the matter was filed to the court.

But it is now water under the bridge for the 31-year-old who has previously been heavily linked with a move to Kaizer Chiefs and Chippa United.

“It feels great to join a team like SuperSport. Honestly, I have always wanted to play for SuperSport. The only thing that made the decision easy is how the team is run.

“The trophies that have been won and the competitiveness of the team also made the decision easy. I think I will enjoy myself and develop in my career,” said Mkhwanazi.

Of his abscence from the game he loves, he said: “To be honest, I need to thank God for this comeback.

“It was never an easy one because I went through a lot. I have grown and not only as a footballer.

“But as a man as well on how to take on life when things are not going the way you expected.”

His coach, Kaitano Tembo said he has been signed so he can groom his young defenders who have been found wanting in some games.

“He comes with experience which is what we have been looking for. MKhwanazi is a God-fearing boy, very humble and respectful.

“He will be a good influence on the young players. When the likes of Tebogo Mokoena and Sipho Mbule were coming through the ranks, we have Dean Furman and Reneilwe Letsholonyane to guide them.

“We want to do the same for our young defenders like Luke Fleurs and Keenan Phillips with Mkhwanazi,” said Tembo.
