Bani-Mapena: Edendale school’s achievement great for women’s football
KwaZulu-Natal’s MEC for Sport, Arts and Culture Amanda Bani-Mapena has welcomed and congratulated Edendale Technical Secondary School.
The Pietermaritzburg school represented South Africa at the Caf African Schools in Malawi and won the tournament.
Bani-Mapena was accompanied by department of education and Safa officials when she welcomed the players at King Shaka International Airport on Wednesday.
The gold medallists also won as the best school team at last month’s KZN Sports Awards, did not only walk away with R1.8 million in prize money from the six-girl teams tournament of the Southern African Schools.
But among them they had a leading goal-scorer. Bani-Mapena heaped praise at the Pietermaritzburg’s school achievement saying the feat augured well for women football in the country.
“We are very excited about this feat achieved by the school. This is a great boost to our School Sport project that was relaunched in early September.
“We wish to congratulate Edendale ComTech Secondary. The players and the coaching staff for flying high the flag of KwaZulu-Natal and women football in particular.

“hopefully this win will inspire the next generation of women footballers. In the long run and through this achievement we can safely envision the bright future of Banyana Banyana,” said Bani-Mapena.
It was the second attempt by the Edendale Technical Secondary School’s Under-15 girls football team at the trophy.
They were runners-up in February this year when the re-invented championship was still called Pan African Schools Championship.
