Spreading anti-woman abuse message through song

by Linda Ximba

In a time when the gender-based violence is assuming alarming proportions, a novice musical group TM SA has added its voice in discouraging the barbaric acts.TM SA is made up of Phakamani Mavundla and Zothani who have fused maskandi and Afro-pop sounds to spread the love message across the land.

They have been around in the entertainment industry for two years but only got the break to record early this year. They have dropped a single titled Sukuma Mkami, which is enjoying high rotation on Durban radio stations.

Phakamani, who plays guitar and is a songwriter, said the continued killings of women and children disturbs them.

“Which is why we sat down with my long time friend Zothani and came up with my longtime friend Zothani and came up with the song which is aimed at preaching the love gospel towards our women and children.

“The women are precious people who need to be taken care of and not be subjected to abuse. Who will protect them if we are the ones supposed to shield them, unleashing war and attack on them?

“With Sukuma Mkami we are calling for men to feel proud of their chosen women, daring them to stand up amongst the crowd to show they are appreciated.

“It doesn’t make sense to us to see a man boasting he’s married or has been in a with someone for the longest time yet he doesn’t have the guts to show off his special one,” says Phakamani.

Zothani said since their youth days back in the Tongaat area have always been in love with music.

During their school days they were part of an Isicathamiya group and criss-crossed the province showcasing their talents in competitions.

They may be new kids on the block but they are gradually making a mark, thanks to social networks they are using to market their craft.

On YouTube, for instance, their single has garnered over 150 views.

Zothani feels the reason why they have been warmly welcomed by the often-critical audience is their uniqueness.

“If you listen attentively to oursound, you’d discover that we fuse different genres.

“I am from the South Coast while my good friend is from Northern KZN. This thing of trying to outsmart each other as artists must stop.

“We rather should be creating a sound that will blow the music lovers away. “The emphasis should be on unity instead of creating unnecessary war,” says Zothani.
