Problematic border bothers Manguzi citizens

By CELANI SIKHAKHANE

The African National Congress (ANC) in uMkhanyakude, KwaZulu-Natal have raised concerns over high levels of crime activities happening at the South Africa/Mozambique border outside Manguzi.

About 23 vehicles that were stolen from different parts of South Africa in the last two weeks were shipped to Mozambique through Gate 6 in Manguzi.

The ANC in that region of Far North (UMkhanyakude District) have described that part of the border as a floodgate of illegal activities.

ANC regional chairperson, Bethwell Mthethwa said the situation in the Manguzi border has becoming a nightmare to many local citizens due to the high levels of crime.

“As the ANC in the region we are very concerned about the lack of security in that particular border gate. The situation is spiralling out of control.

“When criminals steal cars, they also kidnap the owners and dump them naked in the bushes. We’ve then decided to take this matter to the MEC for Transport and Community Safety, Ms Peggy Nkonyeni,” says Mthethwa.

He says there are issues which have hindered government to tighten border security in Manguzi.

“You know in that border there are communities who are relatives and neighbours but they are separated by few meters from the border on both sides (South Africa and Mozambique).

“This make it difficult to create a tight security program because it will mean that we are separating families. But the MEC and the Provincial Commissioner are coming down to Mkhanyakude to discuss this issue in order to fight this scourge of criminal activities that are taking place in that problematic border,” says Mthembu.
