Noxolo’s emotional farewell reminded us of how unfairly Themba Khumalo was treated
By SIHLE MKHIZE
The love that the people of Mzansi showed to Noxolo Grootboom when she was doing her last isiXhosa news bulletin as she has been forced into retirement, was so overwhelming that she cried towards the end and couldn’t end with her signature “nginithanda nonk’emakhaya”.
Her last dance was so big that even president Cyril Ramaphosa postponed his state of affairs update address by 30 minutes to allow Grootboom to have all the attention.
Ramaphosa later paid tribute to her, saying she was a beacon in the broadcast news industry. But the attention and ceremonious farewell also opened up old wounds with some.
The issue of former popular Ukhozi FM newsreader, Themba Khumalo was raised with some questioning the double standards as she was never accorded such an occasion even though she was held dear by the listeners.
It has emerged that Khumalo left the public broadcaster bitter simply because the station never granted her opportunity to say goodbye to the listeners.
While the two cannot really be compared, they both served the nation with distinction for years. Let’s hope Themba is enjoying her pension in peace without stressing about trouble SABC which just retrenched 621 employees because they’re facing financial constraints.
Here is the serious issue that we can’t ignore if we’re really proud citizens of this country – Bafana Bafana. I tried not to voice out my concerns on social media but anger still boils inside me, and I can’t keep quiet anymore. I heard that legendary coach Clive Barker is suggesting Benni McCarthy and Pitso Mosimane to take over this hot seat.
My humble opinion is that the whole management need to be restructured. If I am not mistaken Safa president Danny Jordaan was elected back in 2013. I totally disagree with this, we need new blood and ideas starting from the head. It’s such a disgrace that we failed to qualify for 2022 Afcon in Cameroon.
Passover is just around the corner, perhaps we should focus on it especially since president Ramaphosa held a family meeting on Tuesday night. Yes, he adjusted some regulations but to me it’s going to make little impact in fighting against spreading of deadly Corona Virus.
If you’re a believer, surely you aware that God can acknowledge your prayer even under a tree at home. Traveling to various destinations in large numbers to me doesn’t make sense if you’re serious in fighting with Corona. President wanted to please everyone which is a problem.
